2014 Opening Keynote

Krish Sivakumar
9:10 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.
Topic: Seeing the Unseen

Keynote Speaker:
Krish Sivakumar, Director at Cisco Systems

The Internet has changed the way that each of us work, live, play and learn. A full generation of people now do not know life as it existed before the Internet. With most of the world's population these days it is considered as essential as a utility like power and water.

But have we reached the limits of what the Internet can do? Is there more to discover and do? What are the next things that are going to be affected by the Internet?

Let's have a discussion about what is unseen today that the Internet can reveal tomorrow.

Seeing the Unseen – a journey into a new Internet!

Presentation Topic: Five Key Considerations in Moving To Mobile

Speaker: Kamal Shah, CEO and Founder of Fotonotes

In this session, Kamal Shah will present five key considerations in developing and implementing an enterprise mobility strategy. Today's mobile revolution promises to be as important for the enterprise as computers were in the 1980s, the Web in the 1990s, and software as a service (SaaS) in the 2000s. Virtually every business is keen to join this revolution. However, there is an overwhelming amount of conflicting information about what mobile approach is best, and a sea of vendors competing for attention. This presentation helps to provide a clear roadmap for companies making the move to mobile.

Platinum Sponsor Presentation by Panduit
Presentation Topic:
Next Generation Fiber Structured Cabling and Migration to 40/100G

Speaker: Warren McCarty, Technical Systems Engineer, Data Centers at Panduit

The new high speed Ethernet standards, 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR10, will require a change in the fiber cable plant. Legacy permanent links using single fiber connectors will not migrate to these new higher speed channels since the new standards rely on pre-terminated plug and play cabling based on the MPO connector and multi-fiber trunk cable and patch cords. In this session, Panduit examines the media and connectivity solutions needed to ease the migration for 10 Gigabit Ethernet to 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet and examines the realities and pitfalls in doing so. Also presented are standards based connector polarity and gender issues and the problems that are created, and how to mitigate these problems while saving capital expenditures and money.

Jonathan Koomey

1:40 p.m. - 2:20 p.m.
Presentation Topic: Why Energy Efficient Data Centers are Not Always the Most Profitable Data Centers

Speaker:
Jonathan Koomey, Research Fellow, Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance, Stanford University and Owner, Analytics Press

Many data center facilities focus on improving the infrastructure efficiency, measured by PUE (Power Utilization Effectiveness), but a single minded focus on that metric will often yield perverse results, such as low equipment utilization, stranded capacity, and wasted capital. It's the business results that should matter to data center owners, not improvements in imperfect efficiency metrics like PUE. That means a focus on both the cost per computation and the total revenues from computation, detailed analysis of efficiency improvements in both computing and infrastructure, and sensible application of computer simulation tools to understand how changes in information technology deployment will affect the utilization of data center infrastructure over time. This talk will explore a more holistic, business-focused view of data center efficiency grounded in the key performance indicators that should be most important to the companies that own data centers.

Serena Devito

2:35 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Presentation Topic: eBay Data Center TCO Modeling

Speaker:
Serena Devito, Advanced Data Center Engineer at eBay

Increasingly data center owners and operators are being asked to evaluate the effectiveness or efficiency of different solutions and that decisions be data driven rather than based upon presumption or emotion. This results in the term "Total Cost of Ownership" being thrown around as if it is a lifesaver in the storm of indecision, and to often with little understanding in what or how it is being calculated.

Serena DeVito from eBay's Global Foundation Services has developed a data model that has become the cornerstone for Total Cost of Ownership modeling and has been used as a basis for modeling everything from - compare the efficiency of different server platforms – evaluate different technology refresh time frames – dialing in the sweet spot for data center deployments based upon density - applying different cooling technologies.

In this presentation, Serena will share the concept, methodology and the basis for how eBay is calculating the costs associated with data center space and usage, and how these can then be used to help answer the omnipresent question of "are we making the right decision?"

DCIM – Is that Data Center Infrastructure Management? or Information Management??  What good does real time information do us unless we promptly put it to good use?  Can we automate functions like data center capacity planning, cloud workload distribution, HVAC equipment balancing, and predictive facilities operations and maintenance?  Can we ever integrate our IT operations with our facilities operations in a way that they can reliably work together as a single system? And, how can DCIM provide a return on investment that will motivate good business managers to move forward with its implementation?   This is one of the most controversial issues of our time.  Hear from leaders in our industry working on DCIM solutions of tomorrow that may surprise the most experienced of us with integrated and automated concepts and even existing solutions that will dramatically improve of our data center operations.

In this session we will discuss the difference between a great and "good enough" experience, how quality is a defense against commoditization and the considerable expectations of the end-user. This panel will also discuss the components of an experience that can lead to exceptional and poor perceptions, and how to measure those components.
